Become a R4T house build volunteer

2012 HouseBuilding Team

For the 6th year in a row, Bob Carver and Wendy Cunning will be organizing a volunteer house building effort for the Tabitha Foundation.  Our goal for 2012 is to build 40 houses with a build team of ~ 25 people.

We will be building in Koh Kong province.

What are the dates for the 2011 HouseBuilding?

Wednesday, February 1st, - Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Monday, January 30th - January 31st, 2012: Team arrives in Phnom Penh (stay at Billabong Hotel).  Visit of the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Prison for new builders (mandatory)

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 (AM): Orientation for R4T build team at the Tabitha Cambodia office with Janne Ritskes (mandatory)

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 (PM):  Travel to Sihanoukville (3 hours drive).

Thursday, February 2nd - Saturday, February 4th, 2012: House building in Koh Kong province.

Sunday, February 5th – Return to Phnom Penh

How much fundraising will I have to do?

Each house costs $1010 USD in materials to build. As a Team, we are responsible for raising all the money for the 40 houses we plan to build, plus an additional $1500 for community development. Fundraising activities such as the Rockin4Tabitha concert (September 2011) are being planned.

However, it is expected that each Build Team member raise sufficient funds for a minimum of one house.

What expenses can I expect to incur during the Build?

Each Build Team member can expect to incur the following expenses:

1. Airplane ticket to Cambodia

(~ $1500-2000)

2. Hotel in Phnom Penh (Billabong, $38/night)

3. Hotel in Sihanoukville ($20/night)

4. Transportation costs (van) to/from build area, ($130/person)

5. Food and water ($20-35 per day)

6. Hammer, work gloves, knee pads ($25-50)

What can I expect on the build?

House building in Cambodia is a very rewarding experience. However, it is a lot of work, physically and mentally, requiring each build team member to put aside any preconceived notions about Cambodia and its people, and to be completely selfless. Each builder is responsible for upholding the good will that the Tabitha Foundation has worked hard to foster within the villages. Cambodia is a country still coming to grips with the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge regime, a country unsure of the role of Westerners in their world, as well as a country with deep beliefs in the Animist and Buddhist religions.

General information

Team members must make their own way to Phnom Penh by Friday, January 28th, 2011. Team members will stay at a designated hotel in Phnom Penh (Billabong Hotel). All other logistics (transportation between Phnom Penh and Koh Kong, and accommodations in Sihanoukville) will be organized by the Tabitha Foundation, the costs of which will be covered by the build team members. Each build team member can expect to pay $130 towards van rentals, food, water and costs associated with Tabitha Foundation staff.

While in Koh Kong, lunch will be on the build site. Team members buy food in advance (in Phnom Penh) to bring for lunch. Bread and water will be provided, the costs of which will later be split between team members.

All build team members must bring to Cambodia their own hammer, work gloves, and knee pads.

There are a number of rules that team members must be aware of and abide by to ensure a positive experience for both the villagers and team members. We will provide these beforehand to those who have committed to the build.
